Overview

The Advanced Professional Development Course in Criminological Analysis of Complex Terrorist Systems, developed from a criminological perspective, provides participants with the knowledge and assessment tools needed to understand the terrorist phenomenon of the 21st century: an entirely new criminal element, both for the methods it employs and for its proven capacity to project itself beyond national borders, having recently taken on meta-state dimensions.

The programme analyses in particular the new organisational structures of terrorism which, lacking a central core of control, multipolarised and fragmented, make the task of those responsible for effective countermeasures especially difficult. It is aimed at a qualified audience: State officials belonging to the Armed Forces, Police Forces, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Ministries and Parliament, business operators active in critical infrastructure and in the defence and aerospace sectors, intelligence scholars and analysts, media and private security operators, university researchers and anyone who, driven by strong motivation, wishes to explore the subjects covered in greater depth.

The training is delivered entirely online: UNINTESS adopts the e-learning methodology, which allows you to attend the lessons anywhere and at any time, with only an Internet connection required. The study materials are delivered directly to the student's email inbox, meeting the demands of work, family and geographical distance.

The Course is organised into four modules that lead from the communicative dimension of terrorism through to the tools of countermeasures and the evolution of Italian legislation.

First Module · I communicate, therefore I am

  • A degraded form of communication
  • Information at any cost
  • The relationship between media and terrorism
  • The alteration of perceptual processes

Second Module · The organisational structure of complex terrorist systems

  • The ontogenesis of intelligence
  • The financial structure
  • The objectives
  • Situational prevention

Third Module · The tools of countermeasures

  • Strategic analysis
  • Asymmetric warfare
  • Intelligence Analysis
  • Towards an offensive security strategy
  • The multidimensional response

Fourth Module · Legislative countermeasures

  • Defining terrorism
  • The evolution of Italian legislation
  • On the emotional wave
  • Law No. 155 of 2005
  • Law No. 43 of 2015

On completion of the programme, to enrolled students assessed as suitable following the passing of the prescribed examinations, UNINTESS issues a Diploma formally attesting the achievement of a high level of knowledge of the topics covered in the Course programme.

  • Assessment: a single final test in the form of a multiple-choice test, passed with a minimum score of 18/thirtieths.
  • Entry requirements: at least one of the following: an old-system degree, a specialist degree, a secondary school diploma or a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent foreign qualification.
  • Timing: the examination may be taken at least one month after receiving the study materials and, in any case, within the 12th month following enrolment.
  • Recognition: the Diploma does not carry ECTS credits issued by UNINTESS, but it may be submitted to your own Degree Course Board to be recognised as curricular ECTS credits; public administration staff are provided with the documentation needed to request any recognition of the Course.
