Overview

Every day, millions of people live under the shadow of war, in territories where peace seems a utopia. But peace cannot be improvised: it is built through commitment, perseverance and diplomatic effort. This is the work of peace professionals, the peacekeepers, specialised in conflict management, the protection of human rights and assistance to refugees. The Course of Advanced Professional Training and Updating in Peacekeeping Intelligence prepares personnel, both civilian and military, to be deployed in the Analysis Units of UN peace support missions, covering every aspect of the work of the Joint Missions Analysis Centres (JMACs), from cultural communication to the phases of the intelligence cycle applied to Peace Support Operations.

The programme is aimed at State employees, members of the Armed Forces and the Police, civilian and military executives who work or intend to work within the Joint Missions Analysis Centres, managers and employees of International Organisations, Public Bodies and NGOs, as well as recent graduates, diploma holders and all those who, driven by strong motivation, wish to specialise in the field of Peacekeeping Intelligence.

Training is delivered entirely online: UNINTESS adopts an e-learning methodology that overcomes barriers of space and time, delivering lessons directly to the student's email inbox. A flexible approach that allows study anywhere and at any time, reconciling work and family commitments.

The Course is divided into two modules: the first addresses the fundamentals of intelligence, while the second explores the specific themes of Peacekeeping Intelligence in greater depth.

First Module - The fundamentals of intelligence

  • Definition and purpose of intelligence
  • The intelligence cycle
  • The target
  • Defining the intelligence problem
  • Target modelling
  • The analytical spectrum
  • The sources of intelligence

Second Module - Peacekeeping Intelligence (PKI)

  • PKI: definition and differences with respect to National Intelligence (NI) and Military Intelligence (MI)
  • Ethical issues concerning the use of intelligence in PSOs
  • Intelligence sharing
  • The role of the UN
  • The role of NATO
  • The role of NGOs
  • Characteristics and requirements of PKI in light of the intelligence cycle
  • Relations between PKI and civil society: the importance of CIMIC
  • The relationship between PKI and the prevention and punishment of international crimes

At the end of the programme, having passed the assessment examinations, UNINTESS issues to those deemed eligible a Diploma that formally certifies the attainment of a high level of knowledge of the subjects covered in the Course programme.

  • Assessment: two assessments in the form of multiple-choice tests, one intermediate and one final; each is passed with a minimum score of 18/30, and the final grade is the arithmetic mean of the results.
  • Admission requirements: a degree (old-system, master's or bachelor's), a secondary school diploma or an equivalent foreign qualification.
  • Timing: an overall commitment of about 200 hours; the student chooses the start date and must complete the examinations within the 12th month of enrolment.
  • CFU and Public Administration: the Diploma may be submitted to your Degree Course Council to be recognised as curricular CFU (university credits); Public Administration staff are also issued the documentation needed to request any recognition of the Course.
